# How to vectorize a logo without trusting the trace blindly.

> Learn how to choose a source, trace a logo into SVG paths, review lettering and geometry, and decide when automatic vectorization needs a redraw.

Start with the strongest pixels available, turn visible regions into paths and review the details the source may already have lost.

Review still required

A file can become vector geometry without becoming a perfect reconstruction. This detailed mark still needs inspection inside the face, hair and lettering.

## Trace, compare, simplify, approve.

Automatic vectorization is best treated as a draft. A clean, large source can produce an immediately useful SVG; small lettering, compression and gradients often need correction or manual redrawing.

- [Vectorize a PNG](https://vectorize-logo.com/)
- [Start from a JPG](https://vectorize-logo.com/jpg-to-svg/)

## Four decisions matter more than the button.

The trace can only interpret visible pixels. The useful work is choosing the evidence, controlling complexity and deciding whether the reconstructed shapes are trustworthy.

1. ### Use the best source you actually have

Prefer the largest clean PNG or WebP. Do not upscale a tiny file first: enlargement creates more pixels, not more evidence about corners, counters or letterforms.
2. ### Trace the important color regions

Choose enough colors to preserve the mark without turning every antialiased edge or compression halo into a separate shape.
3. ### Compare at detail and at use size

Inspect letters, tight gaps and negative space while zoomed in, then check whether the same shapes remain legible at favicon or header size.
4. ### Export only after approval

Remove an unwanted background, confirm the palette and trimming, then download the SVG. The file format does not replace visual review.

## Resolution changes what the tracer can recover.

In the Vectorize development benchmark, the clean Starbucks trace reached 97.75% mean region overlap from the 512 px input and 89.44% from the 128 px input. Neither preserved the reference topology.

![Starbucks SVG traced from the 512 pixel benchmark input](https://vectorize-logo.com/benchmark/examples/starbucks-output-512.svg)

**512 px source**: 97.75% region IoU · topology mismatch

![Starbucks SVG traced from the 128 pixel benchmark input](https://vectorize-logo.com/benchmark/examples/starbucks-output-128.svg)

**128 px source**: 89.44% region IoU · topology mismatch

Region IoU measures rendered color overlap, not overall brand quality. Read the [full method and failures](https://vectorize-logo.com/benchmarks/logo-vectorization/).

## Inspect the geometry the pixels make ambiguous.

- Read every letter; recognition is not the same as correct typography.
- Compare counters, tight gaps, symmetry and sharp corners.
- Check white artwork on both light and dark backgrounds.
- Remove detached specks and accidental compression regions.
- Confirm the palette instead of assuming sampled colors are official brand values.
- Test the logo small after reviewing it large.

## Stop tracing when the source no longer describes the design.

Redraw manually when brand-critical lettering is malformed, small holes merge, symmetry is visibly wrong or a continuous gradient must be reconstructed intentionally. Vectorization can make pixels editable; it cannot infer the approved design behind missing detail.
